ISE Webpack and Programmer

Postby Chris » Fri Mar 28, 2014 11:32 am

Hi Simon,

What version of ISE Webpack are you using to program the CPLD and what hardware are you using? I read somewhere I need 9.x

Thanks

Chris

Hi Chris,

I use ISE Webpack 14.6 on Linux. The programmer is a very simple CPLD evaluation board I once bought. Unfortunately this isn't available anymore but others should do as well. All you need are the JTAG and power connections to your XC95108 socket. You might google for "JTAG XILINX" or "XILINX platform cable". There are many cheap programmers/cables out there.

Ok Thanks,

I did find a parallel port programmer schematic on spark fun, I can try that if my usb jtag programmer isn't recognised.
Looks like I have a busy weekend in store.

Good luck, Chris. Did you test if you USB cable is recognized?

I am happy I did finish soldering yesterday. Today is very sunny and I like to enjoy the sun in my british sports car (MG TF) this afternoon. :)

Unfortunately it didn't work so I am spending today putting together a PC with a parallel port from all of the junk in my attic, neither my main machine or my development machine have parallel ports. As I now have the USB JTAG programmer for Altera devices I have decide to modify my Altera ByteBlasterMV to match the Xilinx parallel programmer, they are pretty similar just a few signals to switch.

Fingers crossed.

Too bad. Instead of putting together an old PC you could add a cheap parallel PCI(e) card to your main PC.
I cross my fingers. :)

The modified ByteBlasterMV is detected correctly by Impact, thankfully.

I had read on a forum that the ISE software was a little picky about which PCI parallel cards it would work with, but I suppose as I can get one for £3.99 I could give one a try. I did notice the motherboard I found needs to be re-capped around the power regulators If I want to use it for extended periods.

Tonight I'll finish the programming board, I just need to add a 5v regulator to it and its ready to go.

UK Kiwi getting there slowly.

My hacked up programmer works, I had some scary moments with the device I purchased from China as it didn't return a device ID, I thought it might be counterfeit but it turned out that I'd wire wrapped the wrong pin on the PLCC socket on my homemade programming board

It had previously been programmed so not quite the NOS it was supposed to be, took me a while to realise it was a REV2 device, it wouldn't erase as a REV1.

All problems resolved now and I have a blank device ready for programming. Back to soldering components onto the board.

BTW Farnell have a tube of 15 84PLCC sockets for less than £3, individually they are £0.70 each so if you need more than 4 its worth investing.

Do you have a part number for that? I just had a look and couldn't see the tube.
